SOPA Stance Firm on Organic Integrity

5th February 2009

There can be no compromise on animal welfare, animal health management or feeding regime in organic systems.

At the present time SOPA members are not reporting strong interest in any possible decertification of livestock.

In light of recent imbalances between organic supply and demand SOPA supports discussions by other UK organic organisations to explore options to provide a short-term solution. Options that protect organic product integrity and retain environmental and animal welfare gains achieved by organic production are under discussion.

However the decision on any movement away from the organic standard lies in the hands of DEFRA , the UK Competent Body. No action can be taken without a Defra decision on any change in the organic standard and Defra have not given approval fro any change to the organic standard.

Therefore there are no changes to current SOPA organic standards for livestock production and we will continue to certify organic food to the same high standards.
