SOPA statement on FSA Nutrition Review
3rd August 2009

Organic consumers are generally highly informed and make educated decisions about their food purchases to protect against artificial chemicals and additives in their food. There are many other reasons why consumers purchase organic food: protecting animal welfare, better for Scotland's biodiversity, mitigation of climate change and improving water and soil quality. Not only this, but the organic inspection process protects product integrity so that consumers can be sure that Scotland's organic food is inspected and assured to be fully organic. If the FSA says they are for "consumer choice" then SOPA would urge consumers to find out more about their food, where it comes from and how it is produced. And every time you're buying food, compare the labels and prices for organic food and non-organic food. In many cases buying organic can save you money!

European Commission launches competition to create a new EU organic logo
1st May 2009

The European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development is inviting all design and art students from the 27 EU Member States to enter the EU-wide organic logo competition.

The competition offers a prize that money just can’t buy: The winning logo will be introduced as the official logo for organic products throughout the European Union in July 2010. On the eve of the organic logo competition launch, Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "The new organic logo will bring identity to the organic sector in the EU. It will help in creating the single market, and that's good news for producers and consumers."

With the goal of designing a clever and creative EU organic logo, the EU gives Europe’s up-and-coming talents the chance to create a design that could be printed on millions of product packages. The new EU organic logo will be mandatory for all pre-packaged organic products that originate in the 27 Member States and meet the labelling standards. Additionally, all non pre-packaged organic products that originate from the EU or that are imported from third countries can use the EU logo on a voluntary basis.

Organic Farming a Good Option under New CAP
12th December 2005

"With CAP Reform separating subsidy from production, conversion to organic farming could be a good option on some farms, says SAC’s Senior Organic Farming Specialist, David Younie."

The separation of subsidy support from production on 1 January 2005, and the introduction of the Single Farm Payment, gives farmers an opportunity to reassess their farming operations. And, given the modulation of a proportion of this subsidy support, it will be important also that they consider the opportunities offered by Agri-Environment Schemes such as the SEERAD Organic Aid Scheme (OAS).

Interested in out of season lamb finishing?
25th November 2005

McIntosh Donald has stated that continuity of supply throughout the year is vital to ensure that supermarket shelves are full of home-bred lamb. Producers are urged to consider extending their marketing period, where feeding regimes permit. Finishers in the late spring and summer season should be more confident as McIntosh Donald are currently working on a forward price commitment to put to organic lamb finishers for May and June next year.

Soil Association Scotland is proposing to re-schedule the out of season lamb finishing event in late November provided there is enough interest amongst producers. To register your interest or receive further information contact Lyn Matheson.

Avian Influenza Awareness Meetings

SAC invites you to attend one of the Avian Influenza Awareness meetings that it has organised on behalf of SEERAD across the country.

As well as providing background information on Avian Influenza and Government’s contingency plans, the meetings are intended to make sure that all keepers of poultry, but in particular those from the smaller companies, small-holdings and those keeping ‘hobby’ flocks, are aware of what they can do to protect their birds and themselves from disease.

EFRC - A sense of proportion in a world gone Avian Flu mad
18th November 2005

In the UK, contingency planning has focused much attention on outdoor, free-range and organic poultry, with the claimed risk that they are most exposed to infection from wild bird populations. All commercial poultry flocks are now being registered and logged by Defra. Hobby flocks and back-garden birds are not, despite the fact that such intimate mingling of people and poultry most closely mimics the S E Asia experience. EFRC considers this focus on commercial outdoor and organic units disproportionate.
